چکیده

We consider statistical models which have been proposed for luminosity distributions for the globular clusters in the Milky Way and M31. Although earlier research showed that the cluster luminosity functions in those two galaxies were well fit by Gaussian distributions, subsequent investigations suggested that their luminosities were better fit by t-, rather than Gaussian, distributions. By applying the Bayesian Information Criterion, we do not find overwhelming statistical evidence that the t-distribution is superior to the Gaussian distribution as a model of luminosity distribution for the Milky Way. In the case of M31, we find moderate evidence that the Gaussian distribution is superior to the t-distribution. In neither case do we find strong evidence to support the use of one distribution over the other as a statistical model for the luminosities of the globular clusters in the Milky Way and M31. Consequently, we recommend that the Gaussian be retained as the statistical model for luminosity distribution. Moreover, we urge caution in the use of the KolmogorovSmirnov statistic to justify the choice of statistical models for globular cluster luminosity functions.

We present new BVI ground-based photometry and VI space-based photometry for the globular cluster M92 (NGC 6341) and examine luminosity functions in B, V, and I containing over 50,000 stars ranging from the tip of the red giant branch to several magnitudes below the main sequence turn off. Once corrected for completeness, the observed luminosity functions agree very well with theoretical models...

Globular Clusters in Dwarf Galaxies

Data are presently available on the luminosities and half-light radii of 101 globular clusters associated with lowluminosity parent galaxies. The luminosity distribution of globulars embedded in dwarf galaxies havingMv > −16 is found to differ dramatically from that for globular clusters surrounding giant host galaxies with Mv < −16. The luminosity distribution of globular clusters in giant gal...

The initial distribution and evolution of globular cluster systems

This work considers the evolution of globular cluster systems in galaxies. Here globular cluster systems start with power-law mass functions φ ∼ M−α with slopes around 2.0, similar to what has been observed for the young luminous clusters seen in merging and interacting galaxies. We then follow the orbits of the clusters through their parent galaxy, allowing various destruction mechanisms to di...

Luminosity Function of Faint Globular Clusters in M 87

We present the luminosity function to very faint magnitudes for the globular clusters in M87, based on a 30 orbit Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFPC2 imaging program. The very deep images and corresponding improved false source rejection allow us to probe the mass function further beyond the turnover than has been done before. We compare our luminosity function to those that have been observed i...
